Wright Brothers Memorial Located nearby at Milepost 8, just a quick drive (or bike ride) away. National Monument and museum. This is where Wilbur and Orville Wright made the first powered airplane flight, on December 17, 1903. The Visitor Center has a full-scale replica of original plane, the "Wright Flyer," as well as talks on the history of the Wright Brothers, various information services, and exhibits. The Lost Colony Outdoor Drama America's oldest outdoor drama, written by Pulitzer Prize winner Paul Green, tells the story of "The Lost Colony," an unsolved historical mystery.
